This is out of the norm since it's not a "real" bakery but Dayna and I were at Queens Center the other day when the cupcakes at Starbucks caught our eye. They're a relatively new addition to their pastry lineup so we decided to give it a try.
A disclaimer up front: Angie (my fellow cupcake fiend) has had their red velvet and she did not fancy it at all. However, Dayna and I weren't disappointed with their vanilla bean and double chocolate cupcakes. The cake tasted fresh, unlike the grocery store cupcake taste I expected (although they probably have the same amount of preservatives judging from the ingredients listed on their website).
The frosting on the Vanilla Bean cupcake had real vanilla bean seeds and a soft consistency-- so if you only like thick, whipped buttercream, this may not be for you. The Double Chocolate cupcake was comparable to a brownie and although it was good, we weren't in the mood for chocolate overload. So if you go to go to Starbucks, our pick is the Vanilla Bean cupcake-- with a Tazo Chai Tea Latte :). It's a good enough substitute when you can't get your hands on your favorite gourmet cuppy.
